    About the school bus

For short-distance moves, nothing beats a school bus on cost per seat. A 54-passenger yellow bus frequently costs less per hour than a 30-passenger mini bus, because the vehicle is simpler and the operator's capital cost is far lower.

The tradeoff is comfort. Bench seats do not recline, there is no restroom, no luggage bay and no air conditioning on many older units. That is entirely acceptable for a 45-minute ride to a museum and miserable for a four-hour interstate run.

School buses have an outstanding safety record thanks to compartmentalization — high padded seat backs that absorb impact. Districts and youth organizations often require this vehicle class specifically for that reason.

    School Bus questions, answered

Some fleets have air-conditioned buses, many do not. If you are travelling in summer, make A/C an explicit requirement in your quote request.

A bus rated for 54 children realistically seats about 36–40 adults, since ratings assume three children per bench. Quote adult trips by the adult number.

Many operators restrict yellow buses to a local radius because of hours-of-service and comfort limits. For interstate trips, request a charter coach instead.

It varies by state and model year. Ask the operator directly — several states now mandate lap-shoulder belts on newly purchased buses.
